My recommendation is to arrive as early in the morning as possible. From mid-March to mid-November, shuttle buses between the car park and the base station operate from 7. From mid-November until mid-March, they operate from 8.

At the village base station, there has been a lot of modernisation undertaken in , and much of the souvenir shops, etc have been moved down hill to the car parking area. The ticket office is at the base station village. Adult tickets are 45 RMB each person.

At Mutianyu, the Great Wall runs along the top of the ridgeline, well above the village. Choosing which option to take to get onto the wall is quite strategic and can make a big difference to your day. Mutianyu village is not flat, and the Gondola base station is a bit higher than the cable car, with a longer uphill walk to reach it, but this is minor compared with the uphill walk that you will face on the wall itself, if you choose to purchase a return ticket on the chairlift instead. The enclosed gondola cable car will take you up to Tower From here, hikers can strike out west along the wall towards Jinkou, or more leisurely walkers can head east downhill toward Tower 6.

I believe that the renovated wall extends westward from Tower 14 to about tower 21, before you hit the Wild Wall. Heading east downhill from Tower 6, you can access the Wild Wall very quickly at Tower 1, where the wall branches in multiple directions. But it is possible to buy a one-way ticket on each company. If you take the Gondola up to to Tower 14, it is a downhill walk on the wall to get to Tower 6, where you either chairlift or luge back to the village.

If you take a return ticket on the Gondola, then you will have to walk away from Tower 14, and return to Tower 14 when you want to get off the wall. Similarly if you get a return ticket on the Chairlift to Tower 6 you will have to walk away from the chairlift, and return to it to descend. Both of these options will involve quite a lot of uphill walking.

They are the best option if you want to see some of the wild wall, but they are not a good option if it is a particularly hot day, or you have young children, or elderly visitors who will struggle with the long uphill walking, and steep stone stairs. I do not recommend doing this in reverse! I was amazed how many people we saw who were walking uphill from Tower 6 to the Gondola at Tower This is pretty much uphill the entire way and would be very uncomfortable for many people.

My father enjoyed his chairlift ride back down to the village however. There are very clean public toilets near the ticket office, and at the luge top station at the wall. There are no toilets anywhere else on the wall while you are walking,so it is advisable to go when you get off at the top of the gondola if you need to. At the base station, there are a wide range of lunch and eating options, from Subway, to Chinese and other restaurants, all very reasonably priced. Lunch in any of these restaurants won't cost much more than RMB.

Driver Distraction Using Visual-Based Sensors and Algorithms

Further away from Mutianyu, there are also a number of upmarket restaurants in the nearby villages. About 1 -2 hours out of Beijing, depending where you start from and the traffic. Shutlle bus took us from the main parking to the base of the wall area, then a steep short walk up to the cable car. From here you can walk either way along the opened sections of the wall.

If you did it all its probably 3 hours but you need to be fit. The wall top is mostly well paved, but a few sections very steep and a few very badly paved. Views are incredible, even on a smoggy day like we had, and the scale of the place is just unbelievable. There were a lot of people on the wall when we were there, but you still had moments when no-one was near you. Fantastic views and just a mastery of construction.

I made it almost to the top but had to turn back because I walked so slowly and was with a group on a time schedule. Felt a great sense of accomplishment that I got as far as I did. From Beijing you have around 3 options to visit the Great Wall. We have been advised to visit Mutianyu's section and it was a great decision. It's nearer, has less people, less traffic and the wall itself is fabulous!

Smart tip: if you decide to go, try to do it on Friday, Chinese almost don't travel at Fridays and there are less traffic too. I have excellent wall's pictures with no people at all.

Great experience. They now have shuttle buses and a large restaurant complex greeting you with Burger King etc why do they spoil things? Beyond this there is choice of cable car or a walk to the wall. We took the chair lift as the third option and came down the slide bobsleigh style which is good fun for teenagers and adults.

Suggest a Sunday for less polution or Monday as quieter. This part of the wall less popular than others. Well well preserved and there is a walk of over 30 minutes in each direction so you could spend 2 hours on the wall but 1 hour probably enough on ones knees with degree steps going up and down.
